The Shillong Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd. was earlier known as The Bara Bazar Cooperative Bank Ltd. It was registered under Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Government of Assam on June 01, 1959, vide Registration No. SHILL 51 of 1st June 1959, with its Head Office at Shillong. It started functioning however from the 1st of January, 1966. The Bank's areas of operation are confined to the districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi. The main objectives of the Bank are to cater to the urban poor by providing small credit to petty shop keepers and small traders thereby saving them from the clutches of unscrupulous money lenders, and also to provide other banking facilities. Today the Bank has grown and diversified its business into an institution of repute.
